Open Source Software

"Would you buy a car with the hood welded shut?"
This question has been asked by supporters of the Open Source Movement since 1998, when it was coined by Robert Young, CEO of Red Hat Software. Open Source software means that any individual can "open the hood" and examine how the system works, and how and where information and data are manipulated. The collaborative nature of Open Source means that groups of users and developers join together to support the software and each other.

What are the Implications for the Medical Industry?
Open Source software and standards mean that billing companies, insurance providers, government agencies, and most importantly, patients and their healthcare providers can know exactly what happens to sensitive data. The concepts behind Open Source and Open Architecture are quickly defining the standard in the medical industry, as patients and providers demand to know how confidential patient data is distributed.
